The GDPR / data protection officer (DPO) exam

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies directly across the EU and EEA. Many organisations are required to appoint a data protection officer (DPO) — and even where it is voluntary, a DPO must demonstrate a solid, working knowledge of data protection law. A DPO knowledge certification is a widely recognised way to prove that expertise.

GDPR Exam Trainer is built around the GDPR itself, so it works for candidates anywhere in the EU. You practise the same core articles and concepts that any GDPR-based DPO exam will test, without paying for an expensive in-person course.

Exam format

Most DPO knowledge exams use multiple-choice questions with a fixed time limit and a pass mark of around 70%. The exact number of questions and the duration depend on the certification body, but the topics consistently track the GDPR. Our exam simulation lets you rehearse under timed, exam-like conditions.

Topics 1 & 2
Principles & lawful bases

Principles (Art. 5), lawful bases (Art. 6), special categories of data (Art. 9)

Topics 3 & 4
Data subject rights & obligations

Art. 12–22, processor agreements (Art. 28), records of processing (Art. 30)

Topics 5 & 6
Security & DPIAs

Technical and organisational measures, data protection impact assessment (Art. 35)

Topics 7–10
Breaches, special cases & enforcement

Breach notification (Art. 33–34), HR/marketing/CCTV, supervisory authorities, fines (Art. 83)

Who needs a data protection officer?

Under Art. 37 GDPR, a DPO must be designated where processing is carried out by a public authority, where the core activities require regular and systematic monitoring of individuals on a large scale, or where they involve large-scale processing of special categories of data. National laws can add further obligations — for example, Germany's BDSG requires a DPO once an organisation regularly employs at least 20 people in automated processing of personal data.

Tips for effective preparation

  • Start free: try 30 questions free — no time limit, no credit card — to see how the trainer works before committing.
  • Understand the articles: the GDPR is heavily cross-referenced. Learn how lawful bases (Art. 6), data subject rights (Art. 15–22) and controller obligations connect.
  • Don't skip the hard topics: DPIAs and security measures (TOMs) carry real weight in practice and show up in the exam.
  • Practise with realistic questions: the exam simulation helps you find weak spots and get used to the timed, multiple-choice format.
  • Plan your time: budget roughly 30–50 hours of study, which is about 3–5 weeks alongside a job.

Note: the practice questions in GDPR Exam Trainer are based on GDPR topics and are not the actual questions used by any certification body. We cannot guarantee a particular exam result. Content is prepared carefully, but we cannot rule out occasional errors. For specific legal questions, always consult a qualified data protection lawyer.

Frequently asked questions

What is a data protection officer (DPO) certification exam?
A DPO certification exam tests whether you have the knowledge needed to act as a data protection officer under the GDPR. It typically covers the data protection principles, lawful bases for processing, data subject rights, the duties of controllers and processors, security measures, breach notification and the role of supervisory authorities.
Who needs a data protection officer?
Under Art. 37 GDPR, a DPO must be designated by public authorities, where core activities require regular and systematic large-scale monitoring of individuals, or where they involve large-scale processing of special categories of data. Many organisations also appoint one voluntarily, and national laws (such as Germany's BDSG) can add further obligations.
How is the GDPR / DPO exam structured?
Most DPO knowledge exams use multiple-choice questions with a fixed time limit and a pass mark of around 70%. The exact format depends on the certification body, but the topics consistently follow the GDPR. Our exam simulation lets you practise under timed, exam-like conditions.
Do I need to attend a course before the exam?
No. Preparation is up to you. GDPR Exam Trainer gives you targeted practice questions across every GDPR topic so you can study on your own, without paying for an expensive in-person course.
Is the GDPR the same across the EU?
Yes. The GDPR applies directly across all EU and EEA member states, so the core rules and articles are the same everywhere. Some areas leave room for national rules, but the foundation our questions are built on is EU-wide.
